Greenways Advisory Committee (GAC)

The McLean County GAC has served for over 20 years as an umbrella organization for local government staff, local agencies, and individuals with greenway interests.

The purpose of GAC is to coordinate and advise greenway planning efforts between planning staff and the individuals and entities with a stake in greenway development: government and nonprofit agencies, recreational and environmental groups, farmers, landowners, and others. Key activities include:

  • Creation and implementation of the Greenways Plan;
  • Advocacy and education about greenways’ importance for conservation and recreation;
  • Serving as a networking hub for related groups and stakeholders (e.g. bicycle advocacy and environmental groups)

This broad-based organization has had an important role working in cooperation with the McLean County Regional Planning Commission in preparing, updating and implementing the Regional Greenways Plan.

The McLean County Greenways Program is supported by participation from representatives of MCRPC, the Ecology Action Center, City of Bloomington, Town of Normal, McLean County, Friends of the Constitution Trail, Friends of Kickapoo Creek, the John Wesley Powell Audubon Society, Illinois Prairie Community Foundation, Sugar Grove Nature Center, Illinois State University, Parklands Foundation, Bloomington-Normal Water Reclamation District, McLean County Wheelers and Prairielands Preservation Foundation, as well as individual interested citizens.
